उसी जंगल में एक लोमड़ी रहती थी जो उस दिन बहुत ही भूखी थी। वह अपनी भूख मिटाने के लिए भोजन की खोज में इधर-उधर घूम रही थी और सारा जंगल छान मारने के बाद भी जब उसे कुछ न मिला तो वह गर्मी और भूख से परेशान होकर उसी पेड़ नीचे आकर बैठ गई जिस पेड़ पर कौआ मुह में रोटी लिए बैठा था।
अचानक लोमड़ी की नजर ऊपर बैठे कौवे पे गई। उसने कौवे के पास रोटी देखी और रोटी को किसी भी तरह खाने का विचार करने लगी।
जैसे ही कौआ रोटी खाने को हुआ, नीचे से लोमड़ी की आवाज आई – “अरे कौआ महाराज, मैंने सुना है कि यहां पर बहुत सुरीली आवाज में कोई गाना गाता है, क्या वो आप हैं।”
लोमड़ी के मुंह से अपनी आवाज की तारीफ सुनकर कौआ मन ही मन बहुत खुश हुआ और अपना सिर हां में हिला दिया।
इस पर लोमड़ी बोली कि क्यों मजाक कर रहे हो महाराज। इतनी मधुर आवाज में आप गा रहे थे, मैं यह कैसे मान लूं? अगर आप गा कर बताएंगे, तो मुझे यकीन हो जाएगा।
कौआ अपनी प्रशंसा को सुनकर बहुत खुश हुआ। वह लोमड़ी की मीठी मीठी बातों में आ गया और बिना सोचे-समझे उसने गाना गाने के लिए मुंह खोल दिया। उसने जैसे ही अपना मुंह खोला, रोटी का टुकड़ा नीचे गिर गया। भूखी लोमड़ी ने झट से वह टुकड़ा उठाया और वहां से भाग गई।
भूखा कौआ लोमड़ी को देखता रह गया और अपने किए पर बहुत पछताया।
