एक बार सीतापुरी गाँव में जीरनाधन नाम का एक व्यापारी रहता था। उनकी नौकरी अच्छी नहीं चल रही थी, इसलिए उन्होंने पैसा कमाने के लिए विदेश जाने का फैसला किया। उसके पास न तो ज्यादा पैसे थे और न ही कोई कीमती सामान। उसके पास केवल लोहे का पैमाना था। उसने उन तराजू को साहूकार को सुरक्षा के रूप में दे दिया और बदले में कुछ रुपये ले लिए। जीराधन ने साहूकार से कहा कि वह विदेश से लौटेगा और अपना कर्ज चुकाने के बाद तराजू वापस ले लेगा।
जब वह दो साल बाद विदेश से लौटा तो उसने साहूकार से अपना तराजू लौटाने को कहा। साहूकार ने कहा कि चूहों ने उन तराजू को खा लिया है। जीराधन समझ गया कि साहूकार की नियत खराब हो गई है और वह तराजू नहीं लौटाना चाहता। तभी जीर्णधन के मन में एक युक्ति सूझी। उसने साहूकार से कहा कि भले ही चूहों ने तराजू खा ली हो, इसमें तुम्हारी कोई गलती नहीं है। यह सब उन चूहों का दोष है।

कुछ देर बाद उसने साहूकार से कहा कि मित्र मैं नदी में स्नान करने जा रहा हूं। तुम भी अपने पुत्र धनदेव को मेरे साथ भेज दो। वह भी मेरे साथ नहाएगा। जीरांधन के व्यवहार से साहूकार बहुत खुश हुआ, इसलिए उसने जीरांधन को एक सज्जन व्यक्ति जानकर अपने बेटे को जीरांधन के साथ नहाने के लिए नदी पर भेज दिया।
जीराधन ने साहूकार के पुत्र को नदी से कुछ दूर ले जाकर एक गुफा में बंद कर दिया। उसने गुफा के द्वार पर एक बड़ा पत्थर रख दिया, ताकि साहूकार का बेटा बच न सके। साहूकार के बेटे को गुफा में बंद करके बूढ़ा वापस साहूकार के घर आ गया। उसे अकेला देखकर साहूकार ने पूछा मेरा बेटा कहां है। जीर्णधन ने कहा क्षमा करना मित्र, चील तुम्हारे पुत्र को उठा ले गई।
साहूकार हैरान रह गया और बोला ऐसा कैसे हो सकता है? एक बाज इतने बड़े बच्चे को कैसे उठा सकता है? जीर्णधन ने कहा कि जिस प्रकार चूहे लोहे के तराजू को खा सकते हैं, उसी प्रकार चील भी बच्चे को उठा ले जा सकती है। यदि आप एक बच्चा चाहते हैं, तो तराजू वापस करें।
साहूकार जब मुसीबत में पड़ा तो समझदार हो गया। उसने जीरांधन को तराजू लौटा दी और जीरांधन ने साहूकार के बेटे को आज़ाद कर दिया।

Once there lived a merchant named Jeeranadhan in the village of Sitapuri. His job was not doing well, so he decided to go abroad to earn money. He neither had much money nor any valuables. He only had an iron scale. He gave those scales to the moneylender as security and took a few rupees in return. Jeeradhan told the moneylender that he would return from abroad and take back the scales after repaying his loan.
When he returned from abroad after two years, he asked the moneylender to return his scales. The moneylender said that the rats had eaten those scales. Jeeradhan understood that the intention of the moneylender has gone bad and he does not want to return the scales. That’s why a trick came to the mind of Jirnadhan. He told the moneylender that even though the rats have eaten the scales, it is not your fault. It’s all the fault of those rats.
After some time he told the moneylender that friend, I am going to bathe in the river. You also send your son Dhandev with me. He will also take bath with me. The moneylender was very pleased with Jeerandhan’s behavior, so he sent his son to the river to bathe with Jeerandhan, knowing Jeerandhan to be a gentleman.
