A magnitude 7.5 earthquake has struck western Mexico

Eartquake registered at 7.5 magnitude and struck off the coast of La Placita de Morelos on the anniversary of two devastating tremors.

The quake hit at 1.05pm local time, striking near the town of La Placita de Morelos in the state of Michoacán at a depth of 15km.

In nearby Colima, around 100km from epicenter, very strong shaking capable of "moderate" damage was reported, per USGS data.

In Mexico City, roughly 500 km away, "light to moderate" shaking was reported, which is capable of "very light" damage, especially to vulnerable structures.

Irlanda Villa, of coastal Coahuayana, near the border with Colima, said some walls had fallen, but the big fear was that a tsunami would follow.

As many as 10,000 people were killed in the 1985 temblor, a magnitude 8.0 that struck near Mexico City. The 2017 quake, a magnitude 7.1, killed about 370 people and caused heavy damage in the Mexican states of Puebla and Morelos.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said on Twitter that the secretary of the navy told him one person was killed in the port city of Manzanillo, Colima when a wall at a mall collapsed.
