Lizzo was born in Detroit, Michigan, and lived there for the first 10 years of her life before moving to Houston, Texas.

Lizzo’s real name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson. Although her first nickname was Lissa, when she was in middle school, she changed it to Lizzo after hearing the song “Izzo” by Jay-Z.

She ain't just a pretty face! Lizzo is a classically trained musician, having studied at the University of Houston and specialising in playing the flute.

When Lizzo was 21, her father passed away. She told Teen Vogue that his passing was the lowest point in her life but that it ultimately inspired her journey to self-love.

Lizzo released her first solo song, “Batches and Cookies,” with longtime friend and frequent collaborator Sophia Eris.
